“Mmm. She told me it was a false alarm.”

“That’s good.”

Meg had also told her she hadn’t yet come up with anyone to help out with Matthew.

“That was quite a sigh.” Jordan looked at her questioningly. “What’s on your mind?”

“Oh. It’s just…I still don’t have anyone to help me with Matthew once you leave today.”

“I’m staying.”

Her brown eyes widened. “Excuse me?”

“I’ll stay. Till your hand’s functional again.”

She looked stunned. “But…”

“But what?”

“I thought you were in a rush to leave town.”

“I can spare a week or two.”

“But you hate small towns!”

His laugh was dry. “I’ll survive.”

“But you know nothing about babies!”

“During the day, you can show me. And I’ll put Matthew’s crib upstairs in his room so I can hear him through the night if he cries.”

“But you won’t know what to do if he does!”

“You’ll move upstairs too. We’ll both hear him…then we can rendezvous in his room and you can keep me on the right track. Are you okay with that?”

As okay as she’d feel about an invitation to rendezvous in a dark forest with a panther! But what choice did she have? “I don’t really have any alternative, do I?”

“Then that’s settled.” He frowned. And looked down at Matthew. “Something,” he said in an ominous tone, “feels warm and wet.”

The baby looked up at him with an innocent “Who, me?” expression.
