Aerogel, pictured here, is a type of colloid in which air (a gas) is mixed with a solid (in this case silicon dioxide). It is extremely light and very insulating. The other examples are meringue (a solid foam); mayonnaise (an emulsion); steam (an aerosol); gelatin (a gel); and smoke (a solid aerosol).

ATOMS JOINING TO ATOMS

How wonderful it is that atoms can join, or bond, together. If they could not, the universe would be filled with individual atoms, bouncing off each other but remaining strictly single. There would be no chemical compounds—and certainly no life. Atomic nuclei are not involved in the making and breaking of bonds. That honor is bestowed upon the electrons—and, in particular, the electrons in the outermost shell.
