CHAPTER TWELVE

The Amazonas

Puerto Ayachucho, Venezuela. April 9, 2002

Sonia was very much in Maddox’s mind as he landed his Cessna at the one-lane Cacique Aramare Airport in Puerto Ayachucho.

The small plane rocked and vibrated as it taxied down the poorly maintained asphalt lane that served as the only landing strip for the tiny airport. When Maddox stepped out of his plane, the steamy, hot weather of the Amazonas state hit him across the face like a hot barber’s towel. Caracas was warm, but nothing like the stifling heat he was feeling as he glanced to the west, toward the clandestine Libyan terrorist camp hidden only seventy-five miles from the small airport.

Operation Puma was moving into operational mode and Maddox could feel his adrenaline surging. He was worried about Sonia, but felt at ease knowing that she was in good hands with Tom Rose.

Yet, Maddox was again second-guessing himself for not forcing Sonia out of the country. The alpha male inside him that had helped him track down and kill terrorists could have taken hold and ordered her out, but deep down inside that wasn’t the type of man he wanted to be anymore. Sonia was an independent woman who wouldn’t react well to being ordered to do anything, so he instead tried to reason with her, to no avail. She was staying in Caracas. Her strong will and independence was one of the reasons he had fallen in love with her. At least Tom Rose was with her now.

Maddox’s mind shifted gears when he saw the dust trail from the approaching car.

Ruben Guzman, the DAS intelligence officer, was behind the wheel of the red Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Maddox liked and trusted Guzman. There was a lot of corruption in the Colombian military and police force, so it was harder for Maddox to trust anyone from their ranks, but Ruben had proven to be a good ally. Ruben was the man in charge of the raid of the ELN rebel safe house the year before and had let Maddox interrogate one of the prisoners leading to the discovery of the training camp. That successful raid led to a nice promotion for Ruben, who was now head of the DAS special operations team.

The Toyota truck came to a stop and Guzman quickly popped out from the driver side with a smile and a wave.

“How are you, my friend?” Guzman said as he walked towards Maddox and extended his hand for a firm handshake, followed by a quick embrace.

Guzman was critical in making it possible for Maddox and the Delta Force to launch their assault from Colombian soil, giving the operation the critical element of surprise.

The thought of the Colombian drug cartels striking an alliance with Libya and Venezuela to train at the camp kept Miguel Angel Perez, the President of Colombia, awake at night. He pledged full support to allow US forces to set up their command center on Colombian soil.

The Delta Force squadron was already bivouacking in the Colombian jungle near the town of Casuarito, which was just across the Orinoco River from Puerto Ayachucho, Venezuela.
