MAKE IT PERSONAL

If you write in the same format and at predictable intervals, you can anchor your reader’s images of home even while he is in a situation where other things may be unsettling. Writing by hand with pen on paper creates the most vivid sense of home, especially for people who know your handwriting well. Choose materials that somehow look like home—for instance, a card with an image of a local scene, or special stamps. If you own personally imprinted stationery, use it.

Add enclosures such as local newspaper clippings and photos to your letters from home to provide fun and information. Think twice, however, before you send news clippings to people living in countries with heated political situations and insecure postal delivery.

Let other people at home who might not manage to write a whole letter of their own add a few words to your page or an enclosure to your envelope.

Sometimes you’ll want to type your letter on your computer, when you have phrasing you want to work on, or when you need to plan a long letter or need to keep a copy. A copy on file may be useful if a mailed letter goes astray or arrives late, or if you want to recall something you said before.
