Flaneuring for Exercise
Another way to incorporate flaneuring into your daily routine is to do it while you’re exercising. If you’re already outside running, for instance, you can easily add a few new techniques to your routine as a means of infusing more of the flaneuring spirit into your runs. Into cycling? Easy. Even if you frequent group fitness classes, there are ways to flaneur while getting your heart rate up.
Flaneuring for Runners
A daily run can double as flaneuring. Take new streets, ask friends for their favorite run routes, drive out of your hometown and run in a new park. Think of a fun shape and draw it out on a map; try to stick to those lines while you’re on your run. Any of these things will put you in a semi-new environment, making it even easier to notice the subtle details all around you.
One thing to keep in mind: Safety is always going to come first, and you should have a general idea of where you’re running and how far you are from home. Try to plan your runs for the daytime, and tell someone where you’re going if you’re trying a new route. If you want to track your distance and route, look for an app that does this for you. Strava is a great option—marketed as an app for all athletes, it will not only track your run, but it will also show you your friends’ routes and stats, if you’re looking for inspiration.
Create a group of like-minded running flaneurs and dedicate yourselves to planning a new route every week. Not only are you finding safety in numbers, but running is always more fun when you can hide in the middle of a crowd (at least for me).
