Author’s Note

I’ve had this story in the back of my head for a long time—I knew who Tom was, and I knew he and Colin from Port in a Storm had a past one-night-stand, and I knew he’d be a good Arch-Mage, after some working out of things.

This story takes place more or less concurrently with the events of Port in a Storm—maybe just slightly before. Tom appears in Colin’s story about himself, though not by name. And both Tom and Nicholas will reappear in the third Kitten and Witch story, which is tentatively titled The Warlock Affair and will be more of a murder mystery, when Colin’s accused of a crime…

The Southern California beach town where I grew up has a marvelous ice-cream shop on the pier, and I have fond memories of mint-chip and pistachio and butter pecan, and wandering down to watch the ships, and riding the carousel. I imagine Tom and Nicholas sometimes holding hands and doing exactly that, when they need an escape: breathing in the ocean, licking ice-cream from dripping cones in sunshine, being happy.
