O that my passion would fuse

The valleys I love to flame,

The valleys of decent homes

Threatened by shadows of shame.

O valleys that gave me birth,

And comradeship and song,

Before I go back to the earth

May my eyes see the end of this wrong.

From these broken hills of my home,

Haunts of my boyhood and youth,

I want to shout of the shadows that pass

In the sunshine and splendour of truth.

So you have come down from London,

O young man in plus fours,

To write about our troubles

In slick and popular prose?
