Chapter 25
âIf itâs your job to eat a frog, itâs best to do it first thing in the morning. And If itâs your job to eat two frogs, itâs best to eat the biggest one first.â
âMark Twain
âWhat the hell, Enid?â Dana said as she pulled the truck to an abrupt stop in a parking lot that was less than a mile from Ginaâs home that they had just left.
âIâm sorry!â Enid said, feeling miserable at the thought that her first day of work was about to be her last day of work. âI saw Beauâs picture, and it freaked me outââ
âWho is Beau Lawless to you?â Dana turned in her seat to face Enid.
âHeâsâuhâin my class,â Enid stuttered out, too embarrassed to tell Dana was that she and Beau were having their first date this Friday night.
âThis could be important to the case,â Dana said. âI need to know exactly who Beau Lawless is to you.â
âHow can it be important to the case?â Enid stalled for time as she tried to think.
âJumping Jesus on a pogo stick, Enid! An anonymous woman paid me a shit-load of money to investigate Frank Ficusâs murder and the only stipulation is that I have to bring you along every step of the way, and the first place we goâyou recognize a photograph of someone in the house. Hel-lo?â Dana took her forefinger and poked it into Enidâs forehead. âRing-a-ding-ding, is anybody home up there?â
Scowling, Enid slapped her hand away. âI have a date with Beau on Friday night, if thatâs what you want to know. Happy?â
âHeâs your boyfriend?â Dana said, surprised. âYou have a boyfriend?â
âWhy shouldnât I have a boyfriend?â Enidâs face flushed red and, before she could stop herself, she blurted out, âI know what youâre thinkingâyou think Iâm not pretty enough to have a boyfriend!â Even as the words left her mouth, she hated that she had said them aloudâbecause she knew it was true.
âYouâre too young, thatâs all,â Dana frowned.
âIf Iâm old enough to work for you, then Iâm old enough to have a boyfriend,â Enid said angrily. âBesides, Beau is not my boyfriend.â
âWhat is he then?â Dana eyed her with sudden suspicion.
âI dunno,â Enid gave a self-conscious shrug, âbut heâs not my booooy-friend.â She dragged out the word âboyfriend,â as if she enjoyed hearing the word. âI mean, we kissedâsort ofâand, yeah, he might be crazy about me, but I donât know! Why are you grilling me?â
âStart from the beginning and tell me everything you know about Beau.â
âNo way! Itâs private.â
âThen tell me what you want to tell me,â Dana said with a frustrated sigh.
Enid sat in grudging silence for several moments. âWell, I met Beau in English class this past semester and we started talking. We ate lunch together twice and I saw him in the library once and we kissed once and I accidentally punched himââ
âYou punched him?â Dana said.
âBy accident! Jeez, I mean, he surprised me. When people come at me fast,â Enid waved her hands in
