Chapter 25

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

—Mark Twain

“What the hell, Enid?” Dana said as she pulled the truck to an abrupt stop in a parking lot that was less than a mile from Gina’s home that they had just left.

“I’m sorry!” Enid said, feeling miserable at the thought that her first day of work was about to be her last day of work. “I saw Beau’s picture, and it freaked me out—”

“Who is Beau Lawless to you?” Dana turned in her seat to face Enid.

“He’s—uh—in my class,” Enid stuttered out, too embarrassed to tell Dana was that she and Beau were having their first date this Friday night.

“This could be important to the case,” Dana said. “I need to know exactly who Beau Lawless is to you.”

“How can it be important to the case?” Enid stalled for time as she tried to think.

“Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, Enid! An anonymous woman paid me a shit-load of money to investigate Frank Ficus’s murder and the only stipulation is that I have to bring you along every step of the way, and the first place we go—you recognize a photograph of someone in the house. Hel-lo?” Dana took her forefinger and poked it into Enid’s forehead. “Ring-a-ding-ding, is anybody home up there?”

Scowling, Enid slapped her hand away. “I have a date with Beau on Friday night, if that’s what you want to know. Happy?”

“He’s your boyfriend?” Dana said, surprised. “You have a boyfriend?”

“Why shouldn’t I have a boyfriend?” Enid’s face flushed red and, before she could stop herself, she blurted out, “I know what you’re thinking—you think I’m not pretty enough to have a boyfriend!” Even as the words left her mouth, she hated that she had said them aloud—because she knew it was true.

“You’re too young, that’s all,” Dana frowned.

“If I’m old enough to work for you, then I’m old enough to have a boyfriend,” Enid said angrily. “Besides, Beau is not my boyfriend.”

“What is he then?” Dana eyed her with sudden suspicion.

“I dunno,” Enid gave a self-conscious shrug, “but he’s not my booooy-friend.” She dragged out the word ‘boyfriend,’ as if she enjoyed hearing the word. “I mean, we kissed—sort of—and, yeah, he might be crazy about me, but I don’t know! Why are you grilling me?”

“Start from the beginning and tell me everything you know about Beau.”

“No way! It’s private.”

“Then tell me what you want to tell me,” Dana said with a frustrated sigh.

Enid sat in grudging silence for several moments. “Well, I met Beau in English class this past semester and we started talking. We ate lunch together twice and I saw him in the library once and we kissed once and I accidentally punched him—”

“You punched him?” Dana said.

“By accident! Jeez, I mean, he surprised me. When people come at me fast,” Enid waved her hands in
