PHILLIS PETERS PREPARES A PROPOSAL TO PUBLISH A SECOND BOOK

c. October 15, 1779

All her Wheatleys have left her

or have died, and besides,

during the War, she is poor.

Really poor: the last name of Peters

pays no debts and bakes no bread.

New England is destitute.

(Did you think that because

of Revolution, white

men would give

rights to Negroes?

Or suddenly, lift up

their own, white wives?

I know.

I, too, have my hopes

about power subsiding.

It is human

to expect that

in a flick of a quill,

a lost paradise

will beckon.)

Behold the Negro Poetess,

she that once clung to stone.

Turned now: a discarded rock.

Yet, Phillis Peters still

knows her fine mind,

the sable genius turning

on words.
