Chapter 10: SLUG’S LOG

The blast lasted only about two and a half seconds. Noble was disappointed, obviously, to discover that the brothers had gone nowhere. This was new. He should be in the Existence right now. Brave was still rubbing his eyes.

“Noble?” He squinted his eyes and half expected to find himself suddenly all alone in his room.

“ASH!” That was not what Brave was expecting to hear from his brother. He rubbed his eyes harder trying to get the flash spots out of them, and when he opened them again, he found himself staring presumably at one of the very same raccoons he had run into just hours ago.

“Hey there, Noble boy. Let’s not get too noisy, eh?” He and Noble hugged. He was elated to smell the woods of the Existence in his Friend’s cool silky fur.

“Brave!” Noble whispered, “This is Ash! Ash, this is my older brother, Brave.” Brave was laughing. He knelt down with Noble and extended a hand.

Ash shook Brave’s index finger and accepted the introduction, “It’s nice to meet you, uh, officially. I apologize for the way you encountered us last. My friend and I, we didn’t mean to startle you. Um, and we’re also sorry about finishing off that pie.” Brave smiled.

“Sure. It’s okay.”

“Ash? Where is Casper? And how are you coming into our realm now? Where’s Deemle?”

Ash looked up to Brave. “True to form with questions right outta the gate, this one.” Brave laughed. It was incredible how he already felt connected to Ash; like he was an old family friend.

“Well, chaps, I am proud to inform you that Casper and I, along with a few select others have been charged by our leader, Deemle Finnick, to head up a little gang of our own.” There was a daring glimmer in the raccoon’s eyes.

“So he’s back?”

“Noble, he never left!”

“I mean you found him!”

“Yes, he’s made himself available.”

“Is he here?”

“No. He’s not.”

“Ash, then how are you here?”

“That brilliant Horse has discovered how to get in contact with you all by sending us in his place. Kinda like, a projection. I really am here though. I don’t mean to confuse you. But I am here by means of Deemle Finnick. He’s the sender.”

“Why not just come himself?”

“He’s been needing to send others out in his place since Quedro’s begun catching on to things here and there. See, we underwent a few too close for comfort occasions before Deemle finally agreed to looking into this new strategy. Noble, remember how Casper and I discovered the clue of the flashes? Well, apparently we weren’t the only ones who thought of that.”

“Doesn’t that put you guys in serious danger?”

“Not so far. Deemle’s mostly sending out fake ones, cold trails for those turkeys to follow, and then sometimes, he’ll send us in his place. Oh, my scarf!” He directed his next comment to Brave. “Chap’s always making off with it.”

“Earlier tonight, in the woods, that’s what was happening?”

“Yep. We had to throw off the villains. Alright Brave, you saw the initial activity of our plan.
