CHAPTER 9

RELATIVES, LEGENDS, & FACTS

It was dinner time for the Adventure Club! A sign posted on the wall in the lobby read “Adventure Club Dinner in the Restaurant,” and thanks to that and several other helpful signs with arrows, we were guided to our group.

Large chandeliers filled the dining room with light and we quickly spotted our adventure group seated at two large rectangular tables. Tony and Harper were standing and speaking to the group as we walked in. Hug-a-Bug and I quietly sat down at one of the tables next to Blaze and Song; they’d saved us seats! Clean place settings were neatly arranged in front of everyone.

“We secured your backpacks in our lodge rooms, and we’ll fill you in on the preparations we did while you were gone,” Blaze whispered to Hug-a-Bug and me, trying not to interrupt Tony and Harper.

“Thanks,” I said, and he smiled.

We submitted our food orders when we signed up for the Adventure Club, so we didn’t have to worry about meals. Servers approached our table and gave everyone a dinner plate with a burger and a large salad. Harper and Tony wrapped up their discussion about the hike and everyone grew silent as they ate, chatting more and more the fuller we became. Then we walked with Blaze and Song back to our rooms to prepare our gear for the morning hike.

The four of us decided to stick together and hang out in Song and Hug-a-Bug’s room. “Here’s your gear,” Song said to Hug-a-Bug and I, pointing to our backpacks and hiking poles.

“Thank you for helping us with our gear, Song,” I said.

“That’s what friends are for,” she said, grinning.

“Actually, all of us are more than just friends,” Huga-Bug commented, glancing between all of us.

Blaze raised an eyebrow. “Huh? What do you mean?”

“We’re here with our Papa Lewis, Grandma Lewis, my mom, and my dad. T2 picked us up the other day in his helicopter. Our Papa Lewis and T2 have been on national park adventures together, because T2 is a relative of ours,” I explained carefully, leaving out the magical time travel connection.

Blaze and Song looked at each other, surprised. “Uncle T2 and Aunt Sydney adopted us,” Song said slowly. “When you say you’re related to T2, how are you related?”

“Well, according to legend, our family inherited a unique skill that dates back to the Lewis and Clark expedition. T2 and Papa Lewis are both part of that family, direct descendants,” I explained, waiting.

Blaze nudged Song. “These legendary skills you mentioned,” she said, twisting a strand of her hair around her finger, “do they have anything to do with…time?”

I nodded. Hug-a-Bug, much more to-the-point, said, “Yes, time and travel to be exact!”

Blaze’s eyes widened. “Spaghetti,” he said.

The authentication message! It was good to see that Blaze and Song were practicing protocol.

“Bat,” Hug-a-Bug responded. And with that, the twins visibly relaxed.

“What do you know about time travel?” Blaze immediately asked.

“We’re time travelers! I inherited the ability from Papa Lewis and Hug-a-Bug will soon have the ability as well.
