The Intruder

Crew members darted out of their sleeping quarters while some of the contestants appeared outside their tents.

Lara, Tom, Maye, Rufus, Daisy and Barney ran around the outside of the camp through the trees back to their camping area, where Logan was crawling out of his tent.

“What’s going on?” he asked the group as they paused.

A small crowd was gathering outside the office trailer.

“Come on,” said Lara, as Logan followed them to join the others.

Bleddyn stood beside Portia, his face lined with fury. “Someone’s broken into my office! They smashed the window!”

“The door’s locked, though,” said a man, turning the handle. “And they couldn’t get through that.” He pointed to the break in the window, which was only a couple of inches wide.

Portia flashed a torch inside. “Can’t see anyone in there … but it’s been ransacked.”

Bleddyn banged on the door before turning to his assistant. “Get me the key! I’m going in!”

Portia ran back to another trailer and returned with a key. Meanwhile, Rufus had run around to the side of the trailer with the open window and peered through. Mango cowered under the desk, frightened by the noise. Bleddyn now had the key in his hand and was turning it through the lock. Suddenly, Mango’s eyes caught sight of Rufus, and she launched herself up the wall and through the gap in the window and into his arms, just as the door was opening. Rufus disappeared through the crowd with the monkey hidden under his jumper. Mango’s head poked out at the top as they passed Team Blaze, who were standing watching the commotion. Shiv put her hand on the boy’s shoulder and gave him a wink.

“Come out!” yelled Bleddyn as he charged through the office. “How dare you break into my office!” He searched in cabinets and under the desk before checking another small room at the back of the trailer. He returned to stand on the steps facing the crowd. “One of you has broken into my office! Reveal yourself or you’ll all pay!”

There was silence as everyone looked around at each other. The members of Team Blaze huddled together to conceal Rufus and Mango behind them.

“How’d it happen?” said the Team New Zealand captain. “The door was locked … and they couldn’t get through the window.”

“There’s a window open round here,” said Portia, pointing to the gap where Mango had entered and escaped. “It’s pretty small, though … maybe the kids did it.”

All eyes turned to Maye, Daisy, Tom and Lara.

“Are you kidding me?” shouted Lara. “None of us could get through that gap. Don’t be so ridiculous.”

Portia folded her arms. “Where’s the other boy? There’s another one of you.”

Rufus lifted Mango out of his jumper and placed her in Shiv’s hands, which were stretched behind her. He walked back to his teammates.

“I’m over here. What’s up?”

Portia pointed at Rufus and turned to Bleddyn. “That’s the kid who pretended he got bitten by a snake! He’s a menace!”

Bleddyn rolled up his sleeves and marched towards Team Adventurers.
