Gabriel Lefèvre

“You!” spat Gabriel Lefèvre, who was five feet away from the four.

Lara pushed her arm out. “Stay over there, before I set my dog on you!”

“What have you done with my brother?” cried Maye, who was about to fling herself onto the man before Tom pulled her back.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, girl! You followed me all around Paris and now here you are in Rome! You are a menace! Who are you? Who are you with?”

“We know who you are, Gabriel Lefèvre!” Lara flicked her hair back with a dramatic flourish. Instead of reacting angrily, the man raised an eyebrow in mild bemusement.

“I don’t think you know who I am,” he said, in a calmer tone.

“Why?” asked Tom. “Are you using a fake passport?”

“No, no! I am Gabriel Lefèvre, but I’m not some crook as you seem to think. I am a detective.”

There were a few moments of silence while Maye, Lara and Tom digested this statement.

“You won’t fool us with that old chestnut,” said Lara, her hand on her hip.

“Yeah!” Maye shook her fist. “You need to release my brother!”

Lefèvre rolled his eyes. “For the last time, I do not have your brother! I don’t know who your brother is… all I know is that you are a meddlesome bunch of kids who are ruining my operation!”

“Ruining your criminal operation,” said Lara with a smirk.

Lefèvre flapped his arms to his sides in exasperation.

Tom raised an eyebrow. “If you’re a detective, show us your ID.”

“Fine…” Lefèvre reached into his pocket and stepped towards them.

“No!” Maye pointed to the ground. “On the floor, sunshine!” She had heard a police officer say this in one of the old sitcoms she had watched on TV back at her parents’ apartment in Cairo. Barney barked at Lefèvre, who quickly backed away.

“Okay, okay…” he threw a leather pouch on the ground and took a couple more steps backwards.

Tom dashed down to pick it up and returned to the others.

Inside was a photo of Lefèvre on an official-looking card that contained the words Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure.

“They’re an intelligence agency.” Lara gathered close to Tom and Maye. “I watched a programme on TV about them once with my mum, they’re like France’s version of MI5 or the CIA.”

“Can I have that back now please?” Lefèvre called out.

“We’re still talking!” said Maye, before turning back to the others. “So, do you believe him?”

“I think he’s telling the truth,” said Tom quietly, looking down at the ID. “This looks genuine and if he was one of the bad guys, he wouldn’t be over here talking to us like this. He was on his own at the mountain as well.”

“He might be trying to bluff,” said Lara. She peered back at Lefèvre who was checking his watch. He looked frustrated and concerned, but her gut was telling her he was not corrupt. “Ugh… I think he’s telling the truth as well.”

“Then we need to talk to him,” said Maye. “If he’s being honest, he might be able to help us save Karim.
