Miner 2049er

Originally released for the Atari 8-bit computers in 1982, Miner 2049er was ported to no less than twenty-two different systems over its lifetime! Lucky for us this Game Boy also features several improvements over the original which I will go into later. Miner 2049er was by far original developer Big Five’s biggest hit and inspired numerous clones including the equally famous Manic Miner. The game was actually inspired by the California Gold Rush of 1849, in which the miners were nicknamed 49ers (this is also where the American football team get their name too). It saw you take the role of Bounty Bob trying to recover all the gold from the ten different caverns and get out intact. Miner 2049er was highly praised for featuring far more screens than Donkey Kong or any other similar platform game of the time and for its arcade quality gameplay on a home computer. While the improvements aren’t huge they are a welcome addition and include larger scrolling levels, more detailed sprites and background graphics. The game still only has ten levels unfortunately, which for a 1992 game really isn’t enough. I don’t know why they didn’t include the sequel, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, on the cartridge too or indeed just add extra levels like the mobile version has. Miner 2049er is still a good game while it lasts, the big problem is that it just doesn’t last nearly as long as it should.
