THE FOUR GOSPELS

To reduce expenses, we worked in the house we had moved nine years earlier and hired just two staff. Joyce returned, and her talented son Scott became our editor. As it happened, they both trained in New York City in the very first class offered on the new Softimage system, just two years before we would return to the city for the film festival. When they got back, we began work at an intense pace. We also recorded the narration in Pittsburgh on weekends with Don Wadsworth, a gifted professor of voice at Carnegie-Mellon’s world-class drama department. Then Brian Hanson and Grace Kang were commissioned to write the underscore, making financial sacrifices to create hours of inspiring original music, written scene by scene.

Working first thing in the morning until late in the evening, we finally completed producing the four Gospels by spring 1999. Two of them had never been produced before. By then, it had taken more than seven years from when I first envisioned the Bible on video.

During production, the schedule had been so demanding I wondered if I would survive. Prior to beginning each day’s work, I needed to select twenty to thirty clips from our database of more than 140,000 shots. I then had to load the appropriate video clips into the computer before the staff arrived. At that point, Scott and I would sit side by side all day creating the right look for each scene. He then worked hours more compositing the text. As it was, even when running out of money, I could raise funds only at night or on weekends. When I told people about our project, they often asked if this was all we did or if it was part-time. They had no idea of the work involved. Betty created storyboards, logged the masters, paid the bills, and did the company administration and paperwork. Joyce edited the narration for pacing, designed the titling, and fixed images in her broadcast paint program. Scott created the video effects, edited the tens of thousands of elements together on the timeline, and selected appropriate music where necessary. But, with our new equipment, we made real progress. When we finally finished the four Gospels in May 1999, I felt a profound sense of peace and accomplishment. If I were to die now at least the Gospels were produced. We hadn’t been crazy after all. The Lord had enabled us to come this far. In time I would see just how surely He had led us in undertaking the project. In a year, He would send us to New York City with His warning of an impending judgment; and fourteen months later it would strike.
