Socially/Professionally Tone-Deaf People

Does this sound familiar? You try to have reasonable conversations with some people and you walk away unsatisfied and, perhaps, angry at the impasse that always seems to characterize such attempts. They twist your words, take a sharp deviation in logic, or seem confused at what you're saying, even if it's as simple as “We have a staff meeting at two o'clock in the Blue Room.”

One of my friends was director of communications at an organization and inherited an employee like this. She went to her boss, the president of the company, and her boss gave her the budget for outplacement counseling for the employee. It was an elegant and practical solution that a lot of leaders do not pursue because they want to “fix the problem” in house. My friend recognized that her situation could not be fixed; this was the wrong environment for this person—she just didn't know why.

The nature of the job provoked contentious behavior that bordered on sociopathy. The outplacement counselor determined that the employee, hired to assist with event planning and public relations, really wanted to be a photographer. The counselor helped guide her toward the marketing department of a company where she could apply her photography skills.
