3. The Importance of Setting a Deadline

Setting a deadline matters and it's a critical part of the Law of Specification and your success. When you set a goal in your brain, it activates a part called the prefrontal cortex. This clever part of your brain helps you plan, make decisions, and stay focused. But here's the thing: without a deadline, your brain might not take your goal seriously. It might think, “Oh, I can work on this whenever I want!” And that can lead to procrastination, where you keep putting off your goal.

When you set a deadline, something interesting happens in your brain. It triggers a sense of urgency. Your brain knows that there's a specific time limit to get things done. This sense of urgency can make you feel motivated and determined to work toward your goal.

But why does this happen? Well, it turns out that your brain has a special chemical called adrenaline. When you set a deadline, your brain releases adrenaline, which gives you a burst of energy and focus. It's like a little boost that helps you stay on track and get things done. It can make you feel focused and invincible. It can also make you feel some panic and pressure. Either way, it's the brain's way of getting and staying on task, focusing its efforts on the task at hand.

Setting a deadline also helps your brain prioritize tasks. When you have a deadline, your brain understands that some things are more important than others. It helps you organize your time and focus on what needs to be done first. This way, you can make progress toward your goal in a structured and efficient way.

So when you're working to get yourself among the 6%, and set a deadline for your goals, you're actually training your brain to work smarter and more effectively. You're telling your brain, “Hey, I mean business! Let's get this done!” And your brain responds by releasing adrenaline and helping you stay focused.

When you have something specific you have to go to and a time you have to get there by, you know that you have to allocate enough time to drive, fly, walk, or otherwise arrive at your destination. If you're going on vacation, you know that you have to get to the airport so far in advance of your flight to be able to get through TSA and get to your gate so you don't miss your plane. You calculate the time you have to leave the house, taking into account time of day and potential traffic you might encounter. If you're smart, you give yourself a little extra time to play with in case there's an accident on the road, or this turns out to be the day everyone wants to travel and the line at TSA is twice as long, or the airline keeps changing gates on you. When you get done calculating how long everything is going to take, you give yourself a deadline as to when you have to leave the house.
