In a nuclear power station, the heat generated during fission reactions is captured and used to heat water to a boil. The boiling water produces steam that turns large blades in a mechanism called a turbine. The turbine’s fan runs a generator that creates electricity for industries and for people’s homes, offices, and schools.

Nuclear power is generally considered to be a cleaner way to make electricity than burning coal. It does not produce soot or chemical pollution, and it does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere. However, nuclear power is not without its problems. The transport of nuclear fuel, for example, can pose a risk for people living near highways or train tracks that carry the fuel. In the past, accidents have occurred at nuclear power plants. While this is rare, it is still a concern.
