Chapter 15

The 13th Day

A calendar hung on the wall, next to the door, the pealing wallpaper, and the faint smell of paint from the other side of the door, a memory, hinted that we were still within the house. However, he ensured the face brace, as I dubbed it, only came off when Jack followed his orders and left the premises. This told me a lot. I filed it away for future reference. The nights, I realised, he left the room. Every night without fail, keeping to a strict routine, again I memorised his movements; not that I understood why.

Freedom day loomed. Jack had one more task. When he watched the deranged Lord congratulate him as the TV flickered to life, he’d told Jack he had one more deed to do.

If not for all the fear, the psychological effect of weeks of imprisonment, treated like an animal, I might have questioned what exactly freedom for me would look like. Or, and the question foremost in a rational mind, why free me at all? By then, I was neither clear of mind nor brave, just desperate.

Logic at this point eluded me. I was more frightened of the threat to my person and more so to the taking of my sight! Would this freedom matter if he maimed me, stealing my eyes?

I recoiled at the image sitting in my mind, a pathetic remnant of a bored wife, with an all but failed marriage; which may not survive if I left here today. A shudder, sheer panic taking me in its grip, raised my heart rate to a dangerous level. Sweat no longer beads, but rivers. I knew I was vain and selfish, unforgiving, in all my selfish thoughts I’d not once considered Jack!

Jack now knew what he had to do, his last deed. He must swallow the pill next to his bed and stay there. Lord Gordon promising to return me to our room while Jack slept. And he did, the part the mad Lord left out, too simple.

Jack walked into the Master bedroom looking for the pill he expected to find there. He checked both bedside tables, but found nothing. His pulse quickened. If he carried on like this he was sure to have a heart attack. Striding back out, he turned and crossed the galleried landing, passing the other doors which remained shut. A shudder coursed through him as he saw the room over the library. The one he’d used occasionally lay open. Marching in, his anger peaked. ‘You conniving bastard.’ To know Gordon watched him wherever he went sickened him. There on the bedside table lay one small blue pill and a glass of water. A sick feeling hit him. Was this suicide? Would he awake after this, or was it another sick and twisted trick? But, knowing he had no choice, he pulled the duvet back, threw off his shoes and got in fully dressed. With his elbow propping him up, he took the pill with his free
