Chapter Thirteen

Coffee

He must be crazy. Or she was. Or maybe both of us?

There could only be one reason why Nicolette would suggest they go to his place, and that was to become more intimate.

Terry paused as he drew on his glove. Or maybe not.

His eyes slid over to where she was pulling her little purple knit cap over her head. Maybe her reason for going to his place instead of hers was because she had people over at her apartment, and she wanted a little more time alone with him. Or maybe it was because she was curious to know where he lived. It could be any number of reasons, and none of them sexual in nature. So get that thought out of your head, he scolded himself.

“Do you live far?”

“Actually, it’s about six blocks from here.” He checked outside again. “It would probably be wiser if we hailed a cab.”

Mentally, he cringed at the thought of having to spend what little extra monies he had on a cab. He’d already dipped into what small reserves he had to pay for their snacks and meal. Although he didn’t begrudge paying for them, he had to be careful about where every penny went.

Nicolette sighed. “You might be right. It’s looking bad out there.”

They left the café, braving the rising wind and cold. Terry caught sight of a taxi coming toward them. Thankfully, it was not in service, and he managed to wave it down.

The interior was nice and toasty. Even so, Nicolette scooted next to him until she was pressed against him. Smiling, Terry gave the cabbie his address.

They rode in silence. She rested her head on his shoulder, and the pressure felt good. After a while, he was aware of her threading her gloved fingers through his, and their joined hands lay between their thighs.

When they arrived, he reached for his wallet, but she stopped him. Before he could say anything, she leaned over and swiped a credit card in the machine affixed to the seat behind the driver. He tried to object, but she brushed it off.

“You’ve spent too much on me tonight as it is. This one’s on me.”

“But—”

“Hush,” she told him.

“If you’re a smart man, you better do as she says,” the driver advised with a grin as he observed them through his rearview mirror.

“You’re probably right,” Terry admitted, returning the grin and exited the cab, reaching down to help Nicolette out.

They hurried into his apartment building where the security guard raised a hand in welcome. “Looks like it’s getting nasty out there,” the man remarked, giving Nicolette a casual once-over; except Terry knew better. The man had a mind like a steel trap. He was tucking away her face and features for future reference.

“Tell me about it!” Terry responded, and took Nicolette by the elbow to guide her toward the elevator. She remained silent the entire time, but he saw her taking in the building. It was one of the older structures in the city, and dated back to the 1950s.
