There’s an old saying that reminds us, “Anger is only one letter short of danger.” Both the writers of the Scriptures and modern-day psychologists would agree. They don’t tell us to avoid anger, but they do tell us to learn to control it. Though it’s a natural emotion, it can also be a harbinger of danger. Danger is defined by Merriam-Webster as “exposure or liability to injury, pain, harm, or loss.” We can do all that and more when we allow our anger to develop into rage or fury. The reason I say allow is because it’s always a choice. If we could follow the advice of Confucius in the quotation above, we could prevent a lot of damage—both to others and to ourselves.

When I was still in the classroom, I routinely asked both my teenage and adult students to give me feedback and their viewpoints on a variety of topics. They contributed in many ways to my previous books. The Dirty Thirty of offensive language in chapter 3 is just one example. While writing this chapter, I started thinking about all the horrible things that can result when a person lets his or her anger get out of control. Seeing a list of them might help some people realize just how deadly anger can be if it goes unchecked. I no longer have my students to help me out. But I do have some wonderful friends in the character education movement and have easy access to them through the wonder of e-mail. So I sent off a message to twenty of them and asked for some help.

THE RAVAGES OF RAGE

How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it.
