The yellow light from a lamp beside the couch gave his dad’s face an otherworldly glow, and Remington paused out of view to stare at him. Ordinarily, at this hour, his dad would be asleep. It was the weekend. But tonight, he must have too much to think about. That worried him, and yet, seeing his dad sitting there at all made him happy. It could be much different.

A million questions rose on Remington’s tongue, things he wanted to know ... needed to know ... but time passing, his hesitation spoke louder, and he turned and made his way to bed. Lying flat, unable to sleep, he listened to the house click and pop as it settled for the night, heard his mom get ready for bed, and, an hour later, his dad join her.

He wondered what they’d talk about tonight, or if they’d talk at all. Maybe he’d go to his side, and she’d go to hers. Then, backs turned, they’d pretend nothing was wrong. He hoped not. He hoped they had to admit things now and work on it. Seemed like they’d been doing some better.

His parents’ problems weighting his mind, he considered Javon’s behavior. He was angry. He got that. Here, he’d seemed to be a part of their little group, then he’d changed, spending all his hours with Shylar instead. Javon probably thought he felt bigger than the rest of them, but that wasn’t it at all. He wasn’t any more important than he’d ever been. He simply wanted to give his parents time to work things out with each other. They didn’t need the trouble.

He rolled onto his side, his eyes tugging shut, and drifted asleep. The next morning, after a quick breakfast and a kiss to his mom’s cheek, he set out for Shylar’s. He surprised though when her mom answered the door.

“Good morning, Remington. You just missed her. I sent her to take a present to Mrs. Covington. Perhaps if you run, you can catch up.”

He nodded and thanked her, turning his footsteps back across the lawn then to the east. Mrs. Covington lived in a house she’d been in for over forty years. She’d been widowed ten of those, her daughter, who lived nearby, coming frequently to visit. He’d spoken with her once or twice going to and from the school bus stop. She’d given him cookies a few times.

Remington spotted Shylar a half-block away and called her name. “Shy!”

She paused, her head turned over her shoulder. A happy smile formed on her lips. His breath coming in gasps, he scooted to a halt and took a moment to inhale. He glanced down at the bag in her hand. “Your mom said you were headed this way.”

“Yes. She promised Mrs. Covington a jar of peach preserves from the roadside stand we pass sometimes. She was able to stop yesterday and so I’m going to deliver them. You wanna come?”

He nodded. “I was hoping to see you.”

This made her cheeks pink, but she didn’t comment, instead facing ahead and walking again.
