Chapter 16

JOHN

Here we are, holding hands as the sonographer moves the wand around on Olivia’s belly. When the baby is still, she points out the features to us. It’s fucking amazing to know that that little person in there is our baby! He/she is the length of a banana and is one active little thing!

This might be the best moment of my life. I feel a sense of accomplishment like I’ve never felt before. I love football and sometimes I’ve even thought that I might love it too much but now, I’m not worried at all. All of the national championships and NFL possibilities are nothing in comparison to knowing that we created this little person living inside Olivia. It’s mind-blowing and so damn humbling.

I glance over to Olivia and her eyes are shiny. She’s squeezing my hand so tightly, I feel my bones grinding together but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Yeah, we screwed up. I can’t rewrite history. This is not how either of us planned for or thought this year or our relationship would go.

My girl and I keep our eyes glued to that little black and white monitor with the goofiest smiles known to man. We share tear-filled looks every now and then and we let all the noise outside these four walls fade for a time. The sonographer pauses for a moment and turns to us, “Would you like to know the sex of your baby?”

We both reel back in surprise. We didn’t discuss this. All either of us can manage is, “Uhhh…”

Olivia takes the lead, “We didn’t talk about it.” She turns to me, “What do you think?”

I immediately start shaking my head, “I don’t know.” Of course part of me is dying to know but this doesn’t feel like a decision to be made in haste.

Olivia starts again, looking into my eyes, “It seems like too big a deal for us to make a decision under pressure, right? Let’s talk about it.” I nod my agreement and she turns to the sonographer, “We can always find out later, right?”

The sonographer nods and says, “Of course.”

We turn back to watch our baby turn flips and move like crazy on the monitor.

What an afternoon! Olivia and I sit across from each other at a restaurant near the doctor’s office and for a long time we grin goofily and don’t say a thing.

Olivia breaks the silence, “Can you believe that?”

“No, actually,” I answer truthfully. It really is unbelievable.

Olivia’s eyes start to get glossy and she gives me a wobbly smile that I take a mental picture of. That’s beautiful. This is one of the many reasons I love her. She sees things. I know her brain is really taking this in and she’s processing all the ways this is so profound.

Olivia is on the same page as she says, “All of the challenges of our situation are nothing in comparison to the grace of it. You know?”

All I can do is nod. I see that but I don’t have the words she does for capturing something like this.
