FALL OF A PRINCE

Winifred was right—escaping out of a high window was a bad idea. One man who tried, and failed, was Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. In 1244, the prince had been imprisoned in the Tower of London for three years. His cell was located ninety feet up in the White Tower, which was one of the four towers of the Inner Ward.

Determined to escape, Gruffydd made a rope from sheets and cloth. On March 1, he climbed out of the window. Unfortunately, the rope he’d made wasn’t strong enough to hold his weight and poor Gruffydd fell to his death. The guards would later discover a grisly sight: the impact had shoved his head clean into his chest.
