Chapter Seven

“Here we are again,” Miss Elva said, her hands on her hips. Honestly, she looked just a touch like one of those frilled lizards that flipped their neck fan open with the way her collar rose behind her head in all its sparkly glory, and the effect was nothing short of terrifying. I had to give Denise some credit as she held her ground.

“Indeed.” Denise lifted her chin.

Sensing drama, the party shifted and formed a circle around Miss Elva and Denise. The DJ switched from Christmas music to Jock Jams and the first lines of ‘Let’s Get Ready to Rumble’ played over the speakers. I shimmied my shoulders instinctively and Luna laid a hand on my arm, shaking her head ‘no’ at me.

“What? It’s hard not to dance to this mix. Isn’t Jock Jams meant to get the crowd going?” I hissed to Luna.

“Please try to control yourself,” Luna begged.

“Fine…” I almost stamped my foot when ‘Everybody Dance Now’ started. The rest of the crowd was getting into it and shouts started going up around the circle. Someone reached over and dropped a Santa hat on Denise’s head and instead of tossing it off, she just pulled it tightly over her hair and lowered her brow. Now she looked like a demented elf and Miss Elva like an enraged lizard. Even I was transfixed.

“You always wanted what you can’t have,” Miss Elva hissed. She darted her head forward and Denise dipped to the side. The two women began to circle each other slowly.

Bets were being made.

“There isn’t anything that I can’t have, doll. Don’t you know that?” Denise laughed in Miss Elva’s face.

“There’s plenty of men here tonight. Choose another,” Miss Elva darted her head again and I had to admit my lizard imagery was really on point.

“Doesn’t he get to say who he wants?” Denise said.

“You’re the one who started this whole mess, aren’t you?” Miss Elva hissed. The women kept circling and the crowd began to grow impatient.

“Fight!” One over-served man cried before he toppled to the side.

“If by mess you mean your joke of a fashion show? Then, no. That’s your own damn fault.”

I gasped and Luna gripped my arm. There were some lines one did not cross. I watched as rage raced across Miss Elva’s face and she lunged, this time connecting with Denise. Miss Elva tore off the Santa hat and grabbed Denise by the hair. A resounding cheer went up from the crowd.

“Go on…break it up.” I nudged Luna forward.

“No way. You’re more scrappy than I am.” Luna pushed me closer.

“You have to be kidding me if you think I’m getting between the two of them.”

We watched as Denise reached up and ripped the tiara off of Miss Elva’s head and tossed it into the crowd where the skinny influencer neatly caught it and perched it on her own head. I couldn’t decide who had more gall – the influencer or Denise – but either way I was convinced their end was near.

“Well, I suppose they had a good run…” I whispered to Luna.
