“I’m only doing this because I love you,” Blake said as they headed for the door. “You know Sunday is sports day. I’m supposed to be on the couch.” He snatched her around the waist. “And you’re supposed to be there with me.” He kissed her, gently at first then let his tongue dance along the curve of her lips until he felt her shudder just a bit in his arms. Tentatively he eased back. “See, we could stay here and…”

“No, you promised. Besides I want everyone together.”

“Okay fine. Just for you.”

“Is Steve going to meet us there?”

“Yeah, I gave him the address. I still can’t believe he’s never met Mia.”

“I think they’d be perfect for each other. Steve needs to settle down and Mia needs a good man.”

“If you say so.”

“I do. Now, come on and let’s go. Everyone else is probably there already.”

“Does Dani have ESPN?” he asked, trailing behind her.

Savannah glanced over her shoulder and rolled her eyes.

Just as Savannah predicted, they were the last ones to arrive. And she couldn’t have been more surprised if Martin Luther King had been sitting in her living room.

She glided in on Blake’s arm.

Dani hurried over. “Close your mouth,” she whispered. “Let me introduce you.” She took Savannah by the hand and led her over to meet Nick who was in deep conversation with Claudia.

“Nick, I want you to meet my other best friend, Savannah Fields, and her husband, Blake.”

Nick stood up and shook Savannah’s hand and then Blake’s. “Dani talks about you all the time. Glad to finally meet you both.”

“Thanks. So how long have you known Dani?” Savannah asked.

Blake nudged her.

Nick looked to Dani. “How long has it been, babe? Seems like only yesterday,” he teased.

“Don’t mind him,” Dani cut in. She took Savannah by the hand. “Come with me in the kitchen, will ya?”

“So, what do you think?” Dani asked the instant they were alone.

“I think he’s gorgeous, for starters. But it’s not about what I think. What do you think?”

Dani looked vulnerable for the first time that Savannah could remember. “I think I’m in love with him.” She looked at her friend. “And it’s scary.”

“Oh, Danielle.” She wrapped her in a hug. “Love is scary. It’s supposed to be. That’s what makes it so exciting.”

“Hey, can I get a hug?” Mia came into the kitchen.

Dani sniffed back tears.

“We were talking about Dani’s new man,” Savannah offered. “Our girl is in love.”

“Ain’t he fine?” Mia said. “No wonder she’s been keeping him under wraps.”

“Is that the only reason?” Savannah asked gently.

“I…I wasn’t sure what you guys would think. I wasn’t even sure myself.”

“None of that matters, girl. As long as he treats you right and treats us right, he can hang,” Mia teased.

Dani chuckled. “Thanks, ya’ll. That means a lot.”

“And thanks for bringing Steve,” Mia said. “He’s another cutie pie and really nice.”

“Steve’s a great guy. He just needs a great woman,” Savannah said.
