The next morning, I guess not much was different. She didn't talk about it. I didn't press her. Maybe it was a stress relief thing, I guess. That certainly would help my anxiety, so I guess either way the drug worked. We ate some donuts that were provided gratis. She paid for the movie, too, which I guess answered any questions I had about whether or not she knew what she'd been doing, whether she was completely in control of herself or not.

We were driving in silence, this time. We had hours to go, and neither of us spoke. I wish I could say it wasn't uncomfortable, but for me, it was. I didn't know what to say, and I didn't want to turn on the radio either for fear that would just set her off, ruin the mood. For me, I figured it would just be a happy memory and I'd move on.

We stopped for lunch at a fast food joint somewhere near the border of New York and Connecticut and didn't talk much then either. Ordered separately, and though we were sitting at the same table, we may as well not have known each other. I guess we were lost in our thoughts.

When we finally got back to North Carolina and I thought, at least now I'll be able to get out of this oppressive silence. We pulled up in front of her house and I helped her pull her luggage out of the back. It was only a small overnight bag, so she wouldn't need help with it anyway.

I was getting back into the car when I heard her call out to me.

"I had a wonderful time, David. I hope... Have a good day."

"You too, Mrs--Imani."

I waved goodbye and that, to my knowledge, was the end of it.
