Famous failures

It is slightly worrying that we sometimes take comfort from the failure of others. But we do. Reminding our son of the lackluster history of some of the more famous icons might be just the thing to cheer him up:

Socrates was condemned as an “immoral corrupter of youth.”

Isaac Newton performed poorly at school.

Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four years old and did not read until he was seven. He was described by his teacher as being mentally slow and forever in a dream world.

Beethoven was described by his teacher as being hopeless as a composer.

Charles Darwin was dismissed by his father as liking little else than shooting, being with his dogs and catching rats.

Louis Pasteur was ranked only 15th out of 22 in his undergraduate chemistry class.

The opera singer Enrico Caruso was told by his teacher that he could not sing.

Rodin’s father described his son as an idiot, and Rodin tried (but failed) to get into the School of Art three times before becoming a world-famous sculptor.

Henry Ford was bankrupted several times before going on to develop the Ford Motor Company.

In fourth grade, a teacher called Mrs. Phillips constantly said to a boy that he was no good and would not amount to anything. The boy remained illiterate until he was 26. Then Peter J. Daniel learned to read, made a fortune and wrote a book entitled Mrs. Phillips, You Were Wrong.
