Persephone

When I dreamed, I dreamed I was in chains. Thick ropes of steel loops were wrapped around me. Manacles bit into my wrists, the cold metal of them unyielding. I couldn't move and when I tried to scream, no sound came out.

A voice came from behind me. It was sweet and lilting, each word filled with false levity. “Don't struggle, Persephone.”

A finger touched the nape of my neck, dragging down my spine in a caress. My skin prickled and I tried to buck away from the touch, the voice. I knew who stood behind me and my eyes rolled like a startled horse.

Piri came around to the front of me. His dark chocolate eyes looked me up and down, lingering on my breasts, my hips, my belly. His gaze felt like filthy hands rubbing all over me. My skin crawled in protest. I writhed some more, but I was bound tight.

“Please,” he said. “Stop. If you knew the lengths, the blood it took to gain the ability to dream-jump for this, you wouldn't struggle. You wouldn't want that blood wasted and the death in vain, would you? Oracles do not die easily.”

Panic was a knife in me, slicing clean.

On the surface, Pirithous was a handsome man. His tumble of waves and five o'clock shadow were dark brown. His eyes were pools of chocolate. There was a boyish charm to his face that probably impressed many ladies and fellows throughout his years. But there was also a maniacal gleam in his gaze that ruined it all. He was a stalker, obsessive, and now, I knew, a murderer.

“You're a psycho,” I tried to say, but while my lips were able to move, I remained mute. I frowned, frustrated.

“Tsk tsk, don't make that face,” he crooned. “It's unattractive. Frowning will give you wrinkles, too, with that human body of yours.” He reached out to grab a strand of my hair, twisting it between his fingers. The happy sigh that fell from his lips made me want to vomit.

“Persephone, fighting is stupid. Especially when we all know what an asshole your husband is. Fucking intolerable, really. I'm everything he's not. I'm charming, sensitive, and fun. Together we could rule the Underworld with panache. Once Hades is out of the way, you'll be mine. I swear I'll be good to you. I'll make you forget him. Plans are already in motion, lovely, and soon Hades will topple.”

I tried to growl at him, to kick. It didn't matter that it was useless. I wasn't going to go down without a fight.

Piri laughed and it sounded like honey-coated razor blades. But something in my dream wobbled and he choked on his own laughter. Piri spun around, looking like a cornered fox.

No wonder. From the shadows of my dream, a panther of a god stalked forward. Hades was in his blackest leathers. His eyes promised violence. He moved with the grace of a superior predator, blue fire beginning to light his skin. “You go too far, Piri,” he said.
