Excerpt from police interview with George Pineo, 4 days after the party

Lt. Alan (Pidge) Eisenhauer: So it was a mistake, pure and simple. That’s what you’re saying?

George Pineo: Simple but, um, maybe not totally pure. I didn’t do it on purpose, but I don’t know…Viv’s a pretty girl. I guess it, um, threw me. Dr. Keppo’s always talking about “appropriate behavior,” so I thought he was really going to rip into me.

Eisenhauer: And did he?

Pineo: No. It probably helped that Viv wasn’t upset. He just talked to me about how physicians touch their patients’ bodies in really intimate ways. How it’s a sacred trust, so we have to be careful not to even appear to break it.

Eisenhauer: Meaning?

Pineo: Patients can misread intentions. A doctor can do something totally innocent—make a comment, perform some normal procedure—but there are patients who’ll see it as proof the doctor was abusing them or had “feelings” for them. That’s why you have to do everything by the book. You don’t want to give anyone any ammunition to shoot you with.

Eisenhauer: That’s how he left it?

Pineo: I think his exact words were, “Respect boundaries, follow procedures and don’t let your hormones do your thinking for you, my friend.”

Eisenhauer: And did you?

Pineo: More or less.
