Georgie

Two Days to the Award Ceremony

The kitchen is buzzing with chatter when Georgie walks in for breakfast the next morning. Despite everything that’s going around her head, she slept deeply and had over six hours sleep. When she woke up, she was disoriented for a minute and couldn’t remember where she was, until the sound of cawing crows filled the air.

As always, the delicious aromas of Dee’s cooking fill the kitchen, and, as if it’s calling out for the food, Georgie’s stomach rumbles loudly as she takes a seat next to Morgan.

“Someone’s hungry,” Morgan says.

“It’s all that exercise,” Beth says, glaring at Georgie across the table. Georgie’s initial apology, the day before, hasn’t yet made up for her unkindness, and she needs to address that.

“I’m the same,” Kate says, blushing as soon as she speaks, her voice a rare addition to conversations. “Starving.”

“Of course, Kate.” Morgan pats Kate’s hand. “You’re doing the personal training with Hunter. Is it helping?”

Kate nods. “I think so. He’s taking me for a run along the beach today with Beth and a couple of other people he trains. We’re doing something called a crocodile run.”

“What’s one of them?” Morgan looks at Kate in a way that seems to encourage the nervous woman to open up.

“Well,” Kate says, clearing her throat, “everyone runs in a line behind each other, and one person sets the pace for a distance and then drops off to go to the back, and then the next person sets the pace, and then they drop off to the back, and then it’s the next person’s turn until everyone has been a pace setter, and then you do it all again, and the idea is you run faster than you think you can.”

Georgie smiles across the table at Kate. Kate smiles back and immediately lowers her eyes to the plate of food in front of her.

“Oh, I see,” Morgan says. She turns to Georgie. “Are you doing these personal training sessions with Hunter, too?” Morgan pours herself a glass of orange and holds the jug up to Georgie as if asking if she would like some too.

Georgie nods. “Yes please, to the orange. And no to the pt sessions.” Morgan already knows this, but Georgie says a silent thank you to this wonderful woman who is including her in the conversation. “I’ve not really got any desire to do any exercise during my stay. Dee,” Georgie says, in an attempt to change the conversation, a small part of her still on the task to find out what she can about Pinewoods, despite her growing disinterest in sharing anything more with Ryan. “I notice you have en-suite rooms on the top floor. I wondered if I might move to one of those. That’s if it’s not too much bother.” She isn’t even sure why she’s still carrying out her investigations, other than she always finishes any job that she starts. Maybe Dee will share something useful – and Georgie can decide later if she’s going to use it.
