Craigflower Bridge, south

1.

When the tide goes out, there’s –

there was mud there –

damp of wood trestles,

the Gorge, low, oil-black. Tattered strands

of eelgrass. Dingy, drab, their feelings

no different. Nothing they wanted to touch.

Mudflats, soft and distending

under their feet. A half-circle of girls

around her, like a horseshoe. Then shrieks

like hot ash showering down.

Mud, muddy, shit-

kicking boots. We kicked her

until she was curled in the mud.

As though they hit her harder out of disgust

for tar pitch, the silvery mud,

efflorescence on the water containment wall.

Her face, blood-

daubed, mud-daubed, it was hard to tell.
