Now, we even have robots capable of building other robots and repairing themselves.

Swiss robotics company ABB is investing $150 million to build an advanced robotics factory in China that will use robots to build robots.19

And thanks to 3D printing (see Trend 24), one Norwegian robot has learned to self-evolve and 3D print itself.20

The Weird and the Wonderful

Let’s finish with some weird and wonderful examples that I couldn’t resist including.

The RoboBee X-Wing is a tiny robotic, solar-powered bee that could, in the future, help pollinate plants.21

A 400-year-old temple in Japan has a robotic priest.22

A French night club has unveiled robot pole dancers with CCTV cameras for heads.23 It’s like an art installation making a cheeky wink at robotics.

We even have robo-cockroaches that are impossible to crush. Developed by a team at the University of California, Berkeley, the hope is the super-strong, tiny robot can be used in disaster relief.24
