ON THE WEB

There are abundant resources for primary sources on the Web. In keeping with the structure of this book I am recommending the three that I think will be most useful to use as you apply the teaching methods presented here.

Teaching with documents: From the National Archives and Record Administration. (n.d.). Retrieved March 20, 2008, from www.archives.gov/education/lessons/

This is one of the most extensive primary source collections on the Web. Drawn largely from the National Archives’ massive holdings, the site also includes teacher lesson plans correlated with the national standards in history and civics and government as well as an outstanding set of document analysis sheets ready for use in your classroom. The site's eight document analysis worksheets (covering everything from written documents to movies and sound recordings) all complement Historical Fingerprinting, making this an ideal site to begin thinking about Fingerprinting exercises with primary sources.

The Avalon project at Yale Law School: Documents in law, history and diplomacy. (1996–2007). Retrieved March 20, 2008, from www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/20th.htm

With full text copies of some of the most important documents in both United States and World History, this is by far my favorite resource for primary sources on the Web. One of the unique features of this site, especially for teachers looking to use Historical Fingerprinting, are the in text links within many of the documents that identify and take the reader to the supporting documents quoted or referred to in the text. This is, of course, ideal for use with Historical Fingerprinting. Thus, while the focus of the documents is limited mostly to constitutional, legal and diplomatic history there is still a lot of material to draw from.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. (n.d.). Retrieved March 20, 2008, from www.gilderlehrman.org/collection/documents.html

With featured documents every two weeks, the Gilder Lehrman institute is another outstanding resource for finding primary sources. Equipped with a fairly good search engine, the site has much to offer in terms of relative ease of use and breadth and scope of the documents included.
