Inference

Inference requires students to combine their literal understanding with their own knowledge, taking information from the reading and relating it to what they know.

Why might it be difficult for students to answer an inference question?

Students may find it difficult to answer inference questions because the information is not explicitly given in the reading. One way of helping them is to relate it to inferring in the real world. For example, if your friend comes to class with a wet umbrella; you can infer that it is raining.
