DELAYING GRATIFICATION

Being able to delay gratification is an important skill, and it is very reliant on your child being able to regulate their emotions. Delaying gratification is all about being able to put off (or delay) an immediate “want” for a later time, knowing that if they wait, there will be a better opportunity or an improved outcome at some point in the future. The “Marshmallow Test” was part of a study into the ability of children to delay gratification.5, 6 Children were presented with a plate that had one marshmallow on it (or another type of sweet treat) and were told that the researcher had to leave the room for a few minutes. If the child didn’t eat the marshmallow while the researcher was out of the room, the child would be rewarded with two marshmallows to eat. However, if they couldn’t wait, they were told to ring a bell and the researcher would come back and the child could eat the marshmallow on the plate but wouldn’t get a second one. This was a really fascinating look into willpower, which is what it takes to delay that instant desire to eat the marshmallow to get a better outcome of two marshmallows instead. If you have a moment of spare time, get on the Internet and look up some videos of this test being conducted. Watching the different ways children cope with this challenge, the strategies they use to delay gratification or inventive ways they try to get around the rules of not eating the marshmallow, are pretty inventive and a little amusing.

So why is the ability to delay gratification so important, and what does it have to do with kindness? Delaying an immediate need for a later goal is incredibly important to the overall success and well-being of your child in later life. Who knew marshmallows could predict this kind of stuff?! This is because children who can delay their initial desire for that one marshmallow in order to be given two have the skills required to stay motivated for some bigger goal.
