Chapter 14

After lunch on Saturday, Matt had some work stuff to take care of before he left for Virginia, so we walked back to our street. Matt went to his house to hole up with his laptop and send a million or so e-mails so everyone would know who was responsible for which aspect of what project. I didn’t have to be at the café until late afternoon, so I went down to my house to get Latte and go for a walk.

He bounced around on the end of his bright-blue leash as we walked back in the direction I had just come from with Matt. I felt like going down to the beach even though I knew it would be packed with families of tourists. I just wanted to walk down the boardwalk and listen to the sound of the waves even if they were punctuated by the shouts of playing children.

The beach was packed, since all the timeshares and rentals turned over on Saturdays. Everyone wanted to get one last day on the sand before they headed home. Mother Nature had kindly given them a beautiful, sunny day by which to remember Cape Bay, and it seemed that almost no one had decided to stay in.

Latte was popular on the boardwalk, and he loved the attention he got from all the dog lovers. We could barely walk five feet without someone stopping to pet him or a toddler pointing out the “doggie woof woof.” The walk wasn’t exactly relaxing, but at least it served to get my mind off of Joe Davis’s murder.

When we’d walked the entire length of the boardwalk, we turned around and made our way back the way we’d come, again stopped by excited tourists, some of whom had just seen us on our way down the beach. Even though it was on the hot side of warm out, I didn’t quite feel like going home yet, so we took the long way, making our way through town to the park. The typical gaggle of old men was collected around the concrete chess tables, ostensibly competing, but more likely spending most of their time socializing.

We gradually made our way across the park and down a set of stairs that led to a pond. I noticed a crumpled piece of paper in the corner of one of the steps. Annoyed with whatever litterbug had left it there, I picked up the garbage and carried it to the nearest trash can. We continued through the back of the park and onto my street. When we got to the sidewalk in front of my house, I let Latte off his leash. I pulled out the tennis ball that I'd shoved in my pocket on the way out of the house and threw it as far as I could down the side of the house and into the backyard.

The backyards all along our street were nice and deep, with a natural fence along the back formed by a row of hedges and a thicket of trees.
