In other words, this temporal strategy recalls the marked difference that Melville and other writers sought—and created in their accounts. Both untattooed and tattooed visitors help create the concept of culture through their depictions of the Marquesan patterns. Their purposes and methods diverge, of course, depending upon whether the designs adorn the observer’s skin.
