As a person

Knight—If ever there were a knight to represent the knights of old, it would be the Knight of Swords. Riding full speed on his trusty steed, sword raised and forward in full armor, Llewellyn’s Classic Tarot shows a knight who is the embodiment of a feudal knight. With his fully polished armor, majestic horse, and battle-ready appearance, this knight is the knight of all knights. He will be able to recite the contents of the knight’s code word for word and will more than likely teach it to someone else later on.

Statesman, political adviser, and all-round good guy, the Knight of Swords is all about morals and correct conduct. His word is his bond and he would rather die with honor than bring shame to himself or his king. The Knight of Swords holds himself to a higher standard than most, for he prides himself on being just and true. In practice, it means really having a good grasp on that sword of his, as discipline is a way of life to the Knight of Swords. He is almost zenlike in his daily life; he doesn’t just go through the day mindlessly performing duties and tasks, he does them in a state of mindful meditation.

The quest for the higher realms of the mind is important to this knight. He has a thirst for knowledge and believes wisdom is the key to true inner power. It is a shame that this sort of knight is not as abundant as it once was. Every so often, however, you will see people who understand the importance of education. Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou were real Knight of Swords personalities. Their weapon of choice was their mind, and they encouraged others to educate themselves and find true freedom. They understood that to commit to a fight worthy of their gifts, it had to benefit as many people as possible and not just themselves. This sort of selflessness is just another day at the office for the Knight of Swords.

Prince—The Prince of Swords is in many ways the student of higher learning. Regardless of whether he is a college or university student or a solo student of life, he is on a quest to know as much as he can. His thirst for knowledge is insatiable, like a junkie always looking for his next fix. This need to know more is fueled by the sword he carries at his side. With each swing of his blade he makes room for more and more knowledge.

The Prince of Swords is not quite at the stage where he has refined his knowledge to where it will be of benefit to his role as king—but he will get there eventually. For now it’s like someone has handed him the secret book to the universe and he just wants to soak it all up.
