Jackie had found the perfect house.
Close to the beach, restaurants, shops, the rooms were beautiful, the house was spacious, the pool was awesome, but the hot tub was the best. And that was where I was currently sitting with a full belly and a glass of wine Dee had poured for me. I was also alone. Jill and Jackie had cornered Logan and carted him off into the room the twins were sharing. I was supposed to be running interference but I was exhausted after dinner and I figured Logan could handle his baby sisters, and if he got his boxers in a twist Iâd untwist them later.
It wasnât that dinner was horrible; it wasnât. Apparently, during their last trip to visit Logan, that trip Lucy and her wife had joined them, theyâd discovered the restaurant weâd gone to. Dee had declared it her favorite. Upon finding this out, Ian being the kind of man who wanted Dee to have anything she wanted, demanded we go there for dinner. It had been the only time since weâd arrived in Tybee that Ian had voiced an opinion. The food was excellent, the ambiance was beautiful, and since Iâd relaxed, I enjoyed the company.
Logan was the only one uncomfortable. He wasnât rude or brash or behaving like a dick, he was simply quiet. Almost reflective. Which made Dee watchful. Which made Ian watch Dee. Which made Jill talkative. Jackie and I were the only two at the table who were attempting normalcy.
The good news was I no longer wanted to kill Logan for dragging me on an overnight trip with his family. Dee was sweet and funny. Ian was a nice guy. And Jill and Jackie were hilarious. They reminded me so much of Hadley and Addy. I wished they lived closer because Iâd so be friends with them.
Watching them also reminded me I didnât have what they had. My parents were not bad people, they called me occasionally, I called them, we exchanged emails but we were not close. We didnât let loose and laugh with each other. Up until I started working at Triple Canopy I hadnât realized how disconnected we were.
One of the three sets of French doors that faced the flagstone patio opened and Ian came out with a beer in hand and a friendly smile.
âWould you mind company?â
âOf course not.â
He didnât get into the hot tub, instead, he pulled a chair closer and sat next to it. Night had fallen but the backyard was lit like a tropical oasis. The blue lights in the pool illuminated the water perfectly, the artfully placed solar lights in the flower beds were dim but still highlighted the landscape, and both ceiling fans under the patio overhang were on, casting a warm glow.
It was so beautiful it made me wish for a house of my own. One I could decorate and landscape without having to ask my landlord for permission. Not to mention, itâd be a waste of money if I landscaped my rental.
