I give a quick statement before taking off to look for Cassidy myself. I can’t just sit around while the cops do their thing. My mind is veering off into dangerous places and I can’t even contemplate that it might already be too late.

I decide to take the back lane away from the house. It’s barely more than a track, but if Cassie was on foot, it makes sense that she’d head out this way. There are trees and foliage where she could’ve taken refuge if she needed to hide. My stomach clenches at the thought of her fleeing from a gun-wielding psycho, terrified for her life.

I’ve almost reached the end of the track where it meets the main road when I spot what looks like a bundle of rags at the base of a large conifer. As I pull closer, I realize it’s not rags.

“Fuck!”

I’m out of the truck in a flash and running towards Cassie, dropping to my knees next to her prone body. “Cass, baby, can you hear me?”

Cassie’s eyes open groggily and she tries to focus on my face. “Asher…snake…diamondback!” she croaks.

My eyes widen in horror on her right arm as she tries to lift it. She’s managed to make a tourniquet using her belt, but it’s swollen and turning a blackish-brown color.

“Dear God!” I choke. My mind had been running in dark circles, imagining her being the victim of a bullet wound not a snake bite!

I fumble my phone from my pocket, dialing 911. Dani is working in the dispatch center today and I immediately recognize her voice. “Dani, it’s Ash. No time to explain. I’ve got Cassie here with a snakebite. It was a diamondback. I’m taking her to Porter County General myself, no time to dispatch an ambulance.”

“What?” Dani gasps. “Oh, my, God! Okay, okay, keep it together, Dani,” she says, talking to herself. “I’ll phone ahead and have them waiting with antivenin. Get her there as quickly as you can, Ash. I don’t need to tell you that time is of the essence,” she says urgently, snapping into professional mode.

I hang up and manage to get Cassie into the front seat with her safety belt fastened in a matter of seconds. My heart is almost pounding out of my chest as I put the truck in gear, spraying gravel as I gun it towards the main highway.

A mile down the road I see flashing blue lights in the rearview mirror. It’s Carter and Inola. Dani’s obviously contacted them. I slow a little, allowing them to overtake, knowing I’m getting a police escort to the hospital.

I follow close on their bumper, sailing through red lights and watching as cars part to let us through. Fifteen long, grueling minutes later, we turn into the emergency entrance to the hospital.

As soon as I stop the car, Inola comes running back to help me with Cassie and we carry her to her door where a gurney and one of the ER doctors are waiting to whisk her off.
