CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
The live feed from the camera fixed to the outside wall was displayed on the monitor. On it, Sullivan could see the exterior of the building. The authorities had cordoned the street off. The building was surrounded by police cars, and black cars with blacked-out windows. People in bulletproof vests with FBI written in bold yellow surrounded the entrance, along with a few cops. They all had guns.
Sullivan rolled his eyes. Of course they did. This was America. Even the local baker probably had a bloody gun.
Despite there being so many cops and agents, none of them were entering. Which was sensible. They did not know how many hostages there were. They could not risk life. Fairly soon, Sullivan imagined a trained hostage negotiator would ring the reception phone and try to find out this information. They would speak calmly, listen, pretend to care, and pretend to sympathise. They would go through the FBI rule book step by step.
Sullivan had seen it enough times.
He had also seen it fail enough times.
His only concern was how long the authorities would leave it before entering. For example, what if the terrorists didnât respond to negotiation? What other move did they have?
Surely the FBI wouldnât enterâ¦
Sullivan had witnessed the authorities making stupid decisions before, and he knew he needed to intervene to ensure they knew what they were dealing with; so they knew how many hostagesâ lives would be risked if they tried to enter.
He searched the body beside his feet for a mobile phone. Found one. Used the manâs thumb to unlock it. Searched for the FBI website, found a general phone number, and rang it.
As he was put on hold, he scanned the FBI agents outside the building, searching for something that he could use to prove he was actually there.
Eventually, a woman answered, tired and uncaring.
âHi, I am one of the hostages in The British Embassy. I need to speak to whoever is in charge.â
âOkay, sir, and what did you say your name is?â
âI didnât.â
This woman didnât sound interested. She wouldnât. They probably had many calls like this. So he interrupted her insistence that she took his name.
âListen, I am inside the building, looking out at the FBI. There areâ¦â He counted. âFive FBI cars, three police vehicles. A man with dark blond hair is talking to a man in an Armani suit. That man has a small goatee. Three of the FBI agents are women. Is this enough to prove I am who I said I am yet?â
âListen, sir, I need to know whoââ
âStop asking my name. Ring me back on this number once you get in touch with someone who actually matters. You have ten minutes.â
He hung up.
And, as he waited, he watched the camera feed from downstairs. The terrorists were well-armed. Each had an AK-47, with more bags of guns if they needed them. They were skinheads, all dressed the same, all lost children desperate for an identity.
He counted the hostages on the ground. Forty-two. Then he looked at Daniel, who was standing against the wall with his hands on his head.
