Chapter 6—Logan

LOGAN GRIPPED THE COUNTER, his breaths coming fast and heavy, as if he’d just sprinted a mile. The room swam in and out of focus. Logan knew he wasn’t back to full strength, but that didn’t explain some of his symptoms, like the stabbing pain in his chest or the liquid heat simmering through his bloodstream.

Never in his life had a kiss affected him like that.

When he’d challenged Tanzil to kiss him, he’d been acting on instinct and reacting to the few sparks that arced between them whenever they touched. He hadn’t expected to feel as if the alpha had seared his brand onto Logan’s heart.

As he gathered his scattered wits, he realized something momentous had happened. Given Tanzil’s reaction, the alpha had felt it, too. He’d tried to prevent it, but Logan had goaded him into losing control.

Across the room, the radio squeaked to life. “Tanzil? Buddy, are you there?”

Logan willed his legs to work, and he made his way to the radio. He wasn’t sure how to use it, so he went with his instinct. He picked up the microphone and pressed the button. “This is Logan Fordline. Tanzil is out right now.”

“Logan? Oh, thank goodness. This is Sheriff Bearsmith. How are you doing?”

“I’m recovering. Tanzil saved my life.”

“That’s fantastic to hear. Your fathers are here. They’d like to speak with you.”

Before Logan could reply, his dad’s voice came through the speaker. “Logan, I’m so happy to hear your voice.”

If he wasn’t mistaken, Marlin was crying. “Dad, I’m okay. Really.”

His father, Arlen, came on next. “We’ve been worried out of our minds, son. We’re happy that you’re safe and sound. When do you think you’ll be able to come home?”

Logan didn’t particularly want to return home. He’d come out here to find himself, to decide what path in life he wanted to forge, and he hadn’t done that yet. Plus there was the whole matter of the rift between him and his fathers. They’d refused to accept his friendship with Chase Longfellow because Chase’s mother had been human. Chase had been good enough to work as a mechanic at their garage, but he hadn’t been good enough to be Logan’s best friend.

And that was just the start. They wanted him to be a lawyer. They’d pressured him to go to law school, and he’d hated every second of it. Only recently, when Chase had drawn a line in the sand, had Logan finally started to question why he’d formatted his life to his fathers’ specifications instead of filling it with things that mattered to him.

He cleared his throat. “I don’t know, father. Some of the roads are flooded, and a bridge was washed out, so I’ll have to wait for the repairs. Tanzil said it might take a week or two.”

Sheriff Bearsmith got back on the radio. “You said the warden was out?”

“Yeah.” With the memory of Tanzil’s kiss seared into his brain, Logan scrambled to create an explanation. “He said he had to check on people in the area to make sure everyone was okay.
