Chapter 6

Damian jogged down the stairs and into his study. He removed several books from the shelves behind his desk to reveal a safe. Opening it, he pulled out the family ring. He’d tried to give it to Linc to give to Grace, but Linc had insisted he keep it as it traditionally went to the alpha of the pack’s mate. It wasn’t the norm for a mate’s ring, or any wedding ring for that matter. The center stone was a large square-cut garnet with channel set diamonds on either side. It was one of the few things that had been passed down from alpha to alpha through the centuries. He’d begun to think he’d never make use of it and it would simply pass to Linc’s offspring.

The thought of taking it back up to Kinzie brought a smile to his face until he reached the top of the stairs and looked to the other end of the hall where Xander had posted a guard outside Shasta’s door. He turned away from his own room and walked toward hers.

“Good morning, Alpha.”

“Braden.” He nodded in response. “She giving you any trouble?”

“No. She’s been relatively quiet. I might have been worried about it if Xander hadn’t put someone downstairs. She needs a mate, Damian.”

Damian grinned. “You applying for the job?”

Braden laughed. “Me? Oh hell no. I’d like to be able to close my eyes and sleep at night. By the way, I wanted to give you my best wishes on your pairing.”

“Thank you.”

“She’s a beautiful she-wolf. Kind of eerie how much she looks like Kayla.”

Damian nodded. “It is, but her scent is uniquely her own.”

“I miss them. Evan was such a good friend and vintner, and Kayla was always so much fun.”

“Indeed. I will miss Evan’s counsel not only in winemaking, but as omega. They both added a great deal to our pack and will be missed by all of us.”

When Braden stepped aside, Damian entered the room to find Shasta standing on her balcony overlooking the vineyard.

“A guard down below?” she said turning to look at him. “Did you think I would jump? Frankly, I’m surprised you’ve deigned to leave your mate’s bed.”

“With you, Shasta, I never know what to expect. Linc should be here shortly. I would like to have everyone downstairs when I rejoin the pack with Kinzie. If you think you can manage to behave, I would like you there as well.”

“Don’t expect any well wishes from me.”

Damian shook his head. “I wouldn’t. I’m beginning to believe it is beyond your capacity to see past your own desires to help others.” He sighed. “Talking to you was a mistake. You can continue to remain in your room. I won’t have you upsetting Kinzie or Grace.”

“Funny, your mate didn’t strike me as the pushover type. Did she succumb to the all mighty alpha knot?”

“That’s enough, Shasta. You need to think about how you want to proceed from this point forward. I won’t have you continuing to disrupt the pack.” Damian turned to leave, placing his hand on the doorknob.
