Six

I wondered where Ernie was, as he had almost always been a fixture at Ada-Mae’s apartment since I had arrived in Crystal Beach. Just before everything had gone crazy with Sam’s murder and my dad’s arrest, Gramps had given his blessing to Ada-Mae to seek companionship. I had hoped to see her friendship with Ernie develop into something more.

During the chaos of the last few days, I hadn’t found the opportunity to see if that was happening at all, so I worried that Ernie’s absence might be significant.

“Where is Ernie?” I asked my mom as Ada-Mae saw Rose and Rodney out.

Julia-Mae gave me a wry smile. “As usual, you might want to ask your grandmother about that. She’s always in the know, one step ahead of everyone else with everything.”

I thought about how, once upon a time, those words might have sounded bitter coming from her mouth. Now, my mother just sounded amused.

“She did say something about him ‘making preparations,’” she added. “Along with Judd, the astronaut fellow.”

That sounded like spell stuff to me. So when Ada-Mae returned, I inquired about what was going on and why I wasn’t already in on it.

“A location spell,” Ada-Mae said. “Remember your missing dog?”

I did, indeed. About five years ago, a pedigree puppy called Sapphire was stolen from right under my nose back in Boston. If we hadn’t been able to find the dog, I would have lost my job at Living It Large In Boston magazine for sure. With the help of one of Ada-Mae’s location spells, we not only tracked down the puppy but also uncovered an insurance scam.

Of course, the same spell inadvertently led to my mom losing her opportunity to become the Boston area Tupperware Queen, a hard fall for her that she held Ada-Mae responsible for. Which, in turn, was the start of a sequence of events that ultimately led to my mom and dad’s divorce and a somewhat strained relationship for years between her and Ada-Mae.

Anyway, moving on. I’m sure any old spell could have caused such a family disaster. “I do remember it,” I said.

“Same sort of thing. Jacob has something of Gillian’s. A necklace. We’re going to use that item to try and locate her. It should be fairly straightforward. I’ve been refining the spell since Boston. I will need some extra ingredients from The Invisible Cloak. If I give you a list, could you take Maude to get them?”

I nodded and took a page from a floral-scented notebook Ada-Mae used, as she shunned digital devices like cell phones as “having no spirit to them.” I wasn’t looking forward to facing Zoe again. Rightly so, she was pretty mad at me. Time was of the essence, though, so I took a deep breath and headed out.

Stepping out into the intense Florida sunlight, the first thing I noticed was that it wasn’t… well, intense. Instead, I was met with a gentle breeze. As I made my way to Maude, I thought back on the conversation with the Gantzes.
