CHAPTER 19
CHALLENGES OF RAISING AN AUTISTIC CHILD
I am not an expert on special education, but I cover autism in this book because more than a few helpless parents have come to me asking for advice, saying that their child is showing signs of autism. As it turned out, most of these children were not out of the ordinary; they were simply a little bit slow in their language development, or preferred to play alone. I once met a father who was convinced that his child was autistic because the childâs mother was cold and showed little affection for the child. Parents should never diagnose their children so wantonly, nor should they treat a perfectly normal child as if he or she were autistic. It is heartbreaking to think about children being made to suffer for their parentsâ mistakes. For parents who are in doubt, below is a brief explanation of symptoms and causes of autism and ways to help autistic children.
There are many different types of autism, with varying symptoms and levels of severity. While children with severe autism exhibit a stark difference in growth and development from normal children, mild autism might easily go unnoticed. The majority of autistic children (about 70 percent) have lower-than-average IQ, but some show exceptional skills in specific areas, such as remembering numbers, solving puzzles, playing or composing music, and creating intricate works of art. The special kind of individual with autism who demonstrates profound skill in a specific area is called an autistic savant.
A person with Aspergerâs syndrome has difficulty forming personal relationships; shows stereotypic symptoms, including repetitive patterns of behavior; and has restricted behaviors, interests, and activities. Aspergerâs syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder without noticeable delay of language development, which differentiates it from other autism spectrum disorders in that early language delay is insignificant. People with Aspergerâs syndrome who have normal linguistic development might still have difficulty communicating with others because of their tendency to use pedantic or indirect language.
According to a report by the Center for Disease Control, one out of five hundred children has autism, and one out of one hundred children has an autism spectrum disorder. Autism is more than twice as frequent in boys than girls.
