Chapter Nine

“I need your help,” I say to my friends, Colin and Adam. They live in the flat next door. I’m sitting in their stylish kitchen drinking a cup of coffee. “I’ve invited Max to my flat this afternoon —”

“Some sense at last! You’ve finally decided to stop being a child and have some adult fun,” Adam chides. “When was the last time your bedroom saw some action?”

“Stop!” I say with a grin. I’ve had an earful of them both saying how stupid I am to have rebuffed one of the hottest men in the UK. They can’t believe that this struggling singer would have also turned down Max’s offer to make them a star. Max has been contacting me almost daily. He just doesn’t know when to give up but he’s finally worn me down. “I want you to help me.”

“How?” Adam says, puzzled.

“You can do my make up,” I say as I point at him. Adam’s a very talented and highly sought after make-up artist. He spends a lot of time travelling up and down the country for his work. “And you, Colin, are going to give me a haircut and give my locks the five start treatment.”

“You go, girlfriend!” Colin lisps as he beams his approval. “We’ll turn you into a sex goddess that Max won’t know what’s day it is, yet alone year!”

He grabs a handful of my curls and tuts disapprovingly. “Look at these split ends. Absolutely disgraceful. I thought I told you to come to the salon for a regular treatment?”

I grin ruefully. “Sorry, I’ve been preoccupied. But I’m a rich woman now. I have money in the bank. I don’t need to take advantage of your generosity.”

“That’s ok. That’s what friends are for. Anyway, you can return the favour by singing at a function.”

“Cool. Just tell me when and where.”

“The end of this year. A winter wedding.” Colin says.

“Our wedding,” Andrew announces.

“Huh?” I look at them both in surprise. “Wow! I don’t believe you’ve finally managed to make me speechless, but you have. Congratulations!” I open my arms and they both walk into my embrace.

I squeeze them hard, my arms barely able to contain their muscular frames. I feel the beginning of tears springing in my eyes. “It’s the best news I’ve heard all day. Where’s the champagne?”

“No champagne,” Adam says with a grin, releasing himself from my arms. “You my girl, are not drinking any alcohol. You have to get ready for Prince Charming. I don’t want you burping champagne fumes while getting up close and personal with Mr Billionaire.”

“But I want to celebrate your good news,” I say. “It’s not every day I hear that someone I know is getting married. Drink, now!”

Colin hugs me hard. “We will celebrate, but later. Right now, our mission is to make you look even more beautiful than usual.”

“Thanks, guys. You’re fab!”

Max is here in the building and any second now he’s about to walk into the flat. I open the front door and quickly walk into the bedroom.
