Chapter Twenty-Three

Maverick

As we walk through the crowded restaurant, I press my hand into the small of her back. After an hour of anniversary planning, I have a good idea of what Ember wants for her future wedding – nothing she picked out.

The invitations she pointed to were good quality but moderately priced. Her eyes glowed when she saw one priced ten dollars more per card. The same with the flowers. She pointed to something simple that my parents will approve of, but her eyes continued to shift to a bouquet of red roses with baby’s breath and green leafy things. It was stunning like her.

My parents have plenty of money in their own bank accounts, but they’ve never supported being wasteful with spending. They’ll approve of the ones we picked out. They’re the type that gave us the best but still wore clothes they purchased ten years prior.

At the last second, I snatched up a catalog of wedding dresses and flipped through the pages. Her breath hitched when I turned the page to a sequin tulle sheer jewel neckline ball gown with beads and rhinestones. I wouldn’t have a fucking clue what it was made from, but that was the description next to the dress. The woman looked like she’d stepped out of a royal carriage.

When I glanced up at Ember, she’d shaken her head and wrestled the book from me, turning to a simple dress with a reasonable price tag. If I can even convince her to marry me, she’s wearing the dress she truly wants and looking like a princess.

She may come from money, but it’s clear it never made it to her. She may have lived in a house with servants, but she was an afterthought – an inconvenience. My jaw flexes, and I rub her back in a slow circle. It’s time she was treated to a life of decadence. I hadn’t planned to tell her who I am so soon, but I want her to understand she’ll never have to worry about money.

“This place is expensive.” Her eyes dart from the tables to the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

“You deserve it,” I say against her ear, causing her body to convulse.

She turns to me with worried eyes. “I don’t need all this.”

“Yes, you do. For once, don’t worry about money. Let me do the spoiling.”

She bites on her bottom lip. My heart skips a beat. Holy fuck. I’m in love with her. Really in love. Knock my socks off. Ass over teakettle in love. Shit. Am I ready for this?

She stops and cups my face. “Thank you.”

I’ve never been more ready for anything. “You’re welcome, princess.” I lean down and kiss her lips without an ounce of concern for what the rest of the guests think. As far as I’m concerned, they don’t exist. She’s the only person in the room.

I pull back and wink. “Let’s get to the table before I decide you aren’t getting fed tonight.”

“Oh, I’m getting filled tonight.” Her eyes twinkle as she turns to follow the wait staff, impatiently tapping his foot six yards in front of us.
