Chapter Ten

Before landing in Mexico, Andrei ensured that they were dressed as tourists and not stowaways. A summer dress with sandals for her. Board shorts and a button-down Hawaiian for Andrei in a 3X that barely fit over his shoulders but had too much fabric in the belly. He’d had to keep wearing his loafers, though. None of the luggage had sandals in his size.

The moment they slipped out of the cargo hold, and after bribing the guy whose surprised face spotted them, they left the main terminal and entered a more industrial area for the airport at Hollie’s behest.

“Where are you taking us?” he asked, tempering his stride to match her shorter one.

“You forget who my family is,” she said, keeping an eye open for the hangar that Nora sent her via email. Because, wouldn’t you know, over the course of the dinner at the bar, they’d played their cards straight and banded together to help each other. Mainly, Nora would let Hollie know if she discovered anything from Peter, and Hollie would repay the favor in kind, keeping her in the loop about attacks and the progress of the key.

“You told someone where we’re going,” he stated.

“I told a few people, actually.” She ticked off her fingers. “My aunts so they’d know who to kill if I don’t return. My king because he’d want to know. And Nora, who is currently my liaison back home. Since watching Peter isn’t time-consuming, she’s going to coordinate as much as she can from the ground.”

“That’s a lot of people.” He grimaced.

“Would you feel better if I told you I didn’t text your mom? Although, her latest message was interesting. Something about dying and taking you out of her will.”

“Third time this year,” he muttered.

“Your mother really is nuts.”

“I told you.”

For some reason, she grinned. “Your mommy lo-o-ov-es you,” she sang.

“I’d be willing to share.”

Her nose wrinkled. “No, thanks.”

“So where exactly are we going? Did you manage to get us a private charter? With a sleeper cabin?” Said with such hope.

“That wouldn’t be very discreet. We’re riding on a Pride cargo plane.” She’d messaged Nora from the luggage hold while he’d parked the cart at their departure airport. By the time they landed, Nora had already made the arrangements.

“As livestock?” he said as they passed a set of empty cages sitting outside a warehouse.

“Hell, no.”

“It’s a great cover if a tad uncomfortable after a few hours of not being able to stretch.”

She did a double step and almost tripped. “You’ve been caged before?”

“Yeah. I don’t recommend it. No room to stretch or do your business.”

She bit her lower lip. “Dare I ask why?”

“Poachers kidnapping animals for private sport.”

“You got caught?”

“On purpose. Then dismantled the operation from the inside.”

She didn’t need the details. His broad and somewhat evil grin said it all.

“I should have known you’d be the clichéd hero type.”

“Not a hero. Those poachers were infringing on our territory. They served as an example of what happens when you cross a Medvedev.”

“So, anti-hero, then.
