HAYLEY

“Here’s to having my girls back together again,” I announce, holding my glass of red wine high in the air.

My sisters, Jennifer, Emma, and Kate, all clink their glasses together around the table at the exact moment another roar of energy carries through gaggle of bodies stood nearby. After finding a camp stove and whipping up some dinner for my sisters, I managed to snag us a private booth at the back of Curver’s only bar, which must be some kind of miracle given how packed the place is every damn night. With the number of bodies crammed into the place, we’re perfectly hidden away in our own little world back here.

“So, tell us more about your mountain man cop, Jen,” says Emma, with a smirk.

Her face reddens almost immediately, matching the contents of her glass. “Oh, it’s nothing. He’s a sweet guy, and we’re going to give things a go.”

“Right,” I snicker. “So ‘sweet’ that it took you two hours to ‘just talk’ when you walked to the lake together earlier.”

“Yeah, I bet he let you handle his weapon,” adds Emma, joining in with the laughter. Another perfectly synchronised roar carries through the air from the bar, though something tells me they’re not laughing at the same thing. “Getting a bit rowdy in here, isn’t it,” says Emma, eyeing the crowd for the nine-hundredth time tonight.

“Oh please, you’re just hoping that your new hockey buff shows up,” says Kate, taking another sip from her glass.

“What’s this?!” I squeal, nearly choking on wine. “Has Emma met someone too?”

“It’s nothing,” says Emma, swatting away Kate’s words and half-hiding behind her glass. “Just some guy I met at the lake earlier. But I told him that tonight is some private time for just me and my sisters.”

“Yeah, just some guy that threw himself half down a mountain on a dirt bike to see her.” Kate raises an eyebrow, and Emma shoots her a look that says ‘shut it before I make you eat that wine glass’.

We all burst into fits of laughter, Jen and I exchanging confused looks. “Feels like we’ve missed something here, Jen.”

“And what about you and your mystery guy, Hayley?” quips Kate, not letting up. The wine always goes straight to her lips. “Don’t think I didn’t see you shooting past the lodge earlier on the back of some quad bike.”

“What?!” Jennifer — or should that be mom for all her worrying — nearly chokes on her drink, her eyes shooting wide. “Hayley, you need to be more careful. I swear, trouble always finds you wherever you go.”

“More like she finds trouble,” grins Emma.

“So? Come on, who’s the mystery man?” Kate just won’t let it drop.

I sigh. “He’s a forest ranger. And he’s hella cute. But he’s … I don’t know, a bit too straight-edge for me.” But even as the words leave my lips, the thought of those taught muscles knot my insides. A pressure builds in my core as if my body’s revolting against my own words.
